WINONA LAKE, Ind. - Grace College's softball team fell to Spring Arbor in a pair of games on Thursday afternoon.
The game was played as a makeup date after the scheduled contest was moved from its originally scheduled date due to inclement weather.
The Lancers (4-16, 0-14 Crossroads League) were unable to solve the daunting Cougars (17-4, 8-1 CL) defense, falling 13-0 and 5-0.
Spring Arbor pounced ahead early in game one and did not look back. The Cougars scored in the top of the first, benefitting from two errors.
The Cougars then erupted with four runs in the third, scoring all four with two outs in the inning. SAU had two triples and a double in the frame to power its offense.
SAU had five hits and five runs in the fourth to take a commanding 10-0 lead.
Grace's offense was unable to keep pace, finding its first hit thanks to an outfield single by
Tia O'Connor in the bottom of the fourth.
The Cougars ended the game early via the run rule as Grace was unable to generate additional offense.
Sami Lemler got the start in the circle in game two and kept the Cougars off the scoreboard through the opening two innings.
Bela Duran got into scoring position for Grace in the first frame but the Lancers were unable to string together the hits needed to push her across home plate.
Spring Arbor broke the deadlock in the third inning to edge ahead 1-0 and then doubled their lead in the fourth frame.
Duran and Lemler were on first and second in the sixth inning with just one out but again Spring Arbor's defense rose to the occasion and escaped the inning unscathed.
The Cougars added three more markers in the seventh inning and Grace was unable to answer, dropping the contest 5-0.
The Lancers will play at home again on Saturday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader against Spring Arbor.
