WINONA LAKE, Ind. - Grace College's softball team extended its winning streak to three games with a home sweep of the Bethel Pilots on Tuesday afternoon.
The Lancers (7-17, 3-15 Crossroads League) dominated game one, winning 8-0 in a run-rule shortened game. Grace also controlled game two leading by as many as six runs before claiming the win 7-5 to secure the series sweep.
Chloe Huff got the start in the circle for game one and after a leadoff walk was nearly perfect for the Lancers. The sophomore allowed just three baserunners the entire game and struck out five batters. She retired the final 12 Bethel (7-21, 2-12 CL) that came to the plate.
The Lancers managed three hits through the first two innings but the Pilots defense was able to keep them off the board. In the third inning Grace's offense would break through.
With two outs and the bases loaded,
Bree Gardinier had a base-clearing single that scored
Halle Nett,
Sami Lemler and
Tia O'Connor to push Grace ahead 3-0.
In the bottom of the fourth inning
Montana Brincks and Bella Duran kept Grace's momentum alive with a pair of leadoff singles. Both came around to score after
Sami Lemler singled to center field.
O'Connor then added two RBIs of her own with a single that allowed Lemler and
Daylie Rickard to score which pushed Grace's lead to 7-0.
Huff's dominance in the circle set the table for Grace to win the game with a run rule victory in the sixth inning.
The game clinching run was scored by
Avery Sleeth who scored off of
Sydney Argo's double to deep right center.
Gardinier and O'Connor both had two RBIs in the game. Eight different players had a hit and every player that made an appearance at the plate reached safely at least once.
In game two the Lancers kept the pressure up by jumping out to a three run lead in the first inning.
Nett and Rickard each singled to get the lancers in scoring position and Argo took full advantage with a two RBI double to give Grace the early lead. Argo was brought in to score with an RBI from Gardinier which gave Grace a 3-0 advantage.
The Pilots finally scored their first run of the afternoon in the third inning of game two to pull within two but the Lancers wasted little time in responding.
Lemler, Rickard and O'Connor started off the bottom of the third inning by loading the bases with no outs.
Argo hit a sacrifice fly and
Paige McCorkle added two more runs with a single that gave Grace a suffocating 6-1 lead.
Both teams added a run in the fifth inning as Grace maintained a five run lead into the seventh.
The Pilots found some sustained success in the final frame and plated three runs and had the go-ahead run at the plate but the Lancers' defense held firm to claim the 7-5 win.
Lemler pitched six innings and allowed just two earned runs. Argo had three RBIs bringing her two game total to four.
Bree Gardinier also finished the day with four RBIs.
The Lancers will be back in action on Friday at 3 p.m. for another home contest against Goshen.
