Etchison ties career wins record in split with Huntington

HUNTINGTON, Ind. - Grace's baseball team battled Huntington in a Crossroads League doubleheader on Friday afternoon with each team getting a victory. The first game of the day was a pitcher's duel with the Lancers coming out on top 2-1. The nightcap went to the Foresters 15-6.

Hits and runs were hard to come by in the opener of the doubleheader as both pitchers went deep into the ballgame keeping each other's lineup in check.

The Foresters didn't have a baserunner until the third inning and didn't record a hit until the fourth frame. Evan Etchison dazzled, scattering three hits and a walk over 7.1 innings. He collected five strikeouts on the way to picking up his fourth win of the season, moving him into a tie atop the career wins column with 19.

Grace was able to string a couple hits together early, resulting in the go-ahead run in the second inning. Annikan Pettit started off the inning with a double and later scored on Dalton Cody's RBI single.

From there, neither team could manufacture a run until the final innings of the game. The Lancers recorded at least one baserunner in five different innings, finding a run  in two of those innings.

Grace tacked on the all-important insurance run in the eighth when Mason Wire belted a leadoff roundtripper to put the visitors ahead by two.

The home run from Wire would prove to be the difference. The Foresters were able to plate a run in the bottom of the ninth, but Hunter Schumacher closed out the final inning to lock up the save, his fifth of the year.

Cody went 2 for 4 with an RBI, while Maximo De Leon reached twice with a single and a walk. Four of Grace's six hits went for extra bases.

The second game of the day saw the Lancers with an early 3-1 lead before HU posted a crooked number to seize control of the game 8-3 after three. Seven more runs would cross the plate compared to three for Grace over the remainder of the game.

The first run of the game came when the Lancers had bases loaded in the second and De Leon's fielder's choice scored Pettit.

After the Foresters tied the game in the home half, Grace went back ahead by scoring two runs in the third. With the bases loaded once more, Josh Cosme chased home two with a single to left.

Trailing 15-4, Grace scored its final two runs of the game in the seventh. Ryan Stark earned a leadoff walk and two batter's later Pettit emptied the bases with a long ball.

Three Lancers recorded two RBIs in the game with Pettit leading the way by tallying 2 hits, 2 RBIs, 2 runs and 1 walk.

The Lancers will wrap up the four game series at Huntington on Saturday, starting at 1 p.m.
