Lancers’ bats erupt in series finale

GOSHEN, Ind. - Grace's baseball team enjoyed an offensive explosion in the series finale against Goshen on Monday.

The Lancers amassed 15 hits in a 12-1 rout of the Maple Leafs. Grace won three of the four games in the series against Goshen.

Eight of Grace's 15 hits went for extra bases, including 5 doubles, 1 triple and 2 home runs.

Grace's scoring began early. In the top of the first, Grace scored three runs with two outs in the inning.

Jose Ayala drove in two runners with a double, and Josh Cosme followed up with another RBI to plate Ayala.

In the second inning, Maximo De Leon belted a two-run homer. Ryan Stark and Ayala also produced a pair of RBI doubles in the frame as Grace quickly extended its lead to 7-0.

Cosme drove in Grace's eighth run during the fourth inning, using a two-out triple to score Dalton Cody.

The Lancers made certain of the victory with another offensive outburst in the top of the seventh. Mason Wire and Bradyn McIntosh scored thanks to smart baserunning. Later, John Joyce blasted a two-run home run to right field to cap off a four-run inning.

The Maple Leafs scored their lone run in the bottom of the seventh, but it was far from enough as Grace won by 11.

Parker Newby and Steen Bellerjeau combined to mute the Maple Leafs from the mound. Newby provided the heavy lifting, going 6.1 innings and striking out 12 in a dominant performance. He allowed five hits and three walks.

Cody hit 3 for 4 with 2 stolen bases and 2 runs scored, and Ayala hit 2 for 4 with three RBIs.

Cosme had two hits and two RBIs, and Gabriel Maldonado finished the day hitting 2 for 3.

The Lancers will return home for a 1 p.m. doubleheader against IU South Bend on Tuesday. Grace will end the week with a road series at Marian.
