INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Two records were broken in the series opener for Grace's baseball team against Marian on Thursday afternoon. The Lancers picked up an important win in game one 5-2, but dropped a heartbreaker 2-1 in the nightcap. With the split, Grace maintains a one game lead in the conference standings for a spot in the conference tournament.
Evan Etchison sizzled once again on the mound on his way to collecting his 20th career win. The decision puts him alone at the top of the all-time list, breaking Darrell Johnson's mark set back in 1973.
Grace opened up the scoring with a run in the top of the first after
Josh Cosme's RBI double to left. The 1-0 scoreline held until the fourth when the Knights plated a run to tie the game.
The visitors used a big inning to break the deadlock, scoring four runs in the sixth to create some breathing room.
Ryan Stark became the single-season home run leader with a solo blast to start the rally. His 13th longball of the year broke teammate
Grant Hartley's record. Hartley later added an RBI single and
John Joyce drove in two runs with some help from a defensive miscue to give Grace a four-run lead.
Marian clawed back a run in the bottom half to get within three, but that was as close as they would get the rest of the way.
Grace went to the bullpen with one out in the seventh with
Steen Bellerjeau and
Hunter Schumacher allowing just two baserunners over the final 2.2 innings. The trio combined for 15 strikeouts in the game. Etchison accounted for 11 with Bellerjeau and Schumacher, who picked up the save, adding two apiece.
Hartley finished the game 2 for 4 with 1 run and 1 RBI. Cosme had 2 hits and 1 RBI.
Game two of the day was close throughout. The Knights manufactured a run in the third and held a brief 1-0 lead until Grace leveled the score in the fourth frame. The score remained even until the sixth when MU found the breakthrough and the eventual winning run crossed the plate.
Grace's lone run came off the bat of Joyce when he tripled to right field, chasing home Cosme. The bats, however, were held in check the rest of the way with only one batter reaching base after the fourth inning.
Kyle Reinartz and
Joey Diaz each pitched 3.0 innings with seven strikeouts between the two.
The Lancers will continue the series with another doubleheader against the Knights on Friday at 2 p.m.
