Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Grace impressive in first win of season

WINONA LAKE, Ind. - Grace College's men's soccer team picked up its first win of the season with a 1-0 win over Graceland on Saturday afternoon.

The Lancers (1-0-1) were dominant throughout the contest and completely shut down the Yellow Jackets offense that had scored two goals against Grace's fellow Crossroads League member No. 11 Bethel just two days prior.

For their part, Grace had an almost identical start against Graceland as they had in their 1-1 draw with Cumberlands on Thursday night. The Lancers had a golden scoring opportunity just minutes into the game.

A near perfect crossing opportunity was headed through the box to Diego Yanes whose point blank shot was pushed away by the Yellow Jackets keeper.

Graceland responded with a pair of shots of their own in the tenth minute, but both shots sailed well clear of their mark.

Possession was controlled by the Lancers through most of the half which led to a plethora of corner kicks and another shot from Yanes that was blocked by a Yellow Jacket defender before making it on goal.

A set-piece opportunity for the Lancers nearly gave the Lancers the lead with 10 minutes left in the half. This time it was Vasco Tavares whose in-close chance was negated by a tremendous effort from the opposing keeper. The deadlock wouldn't last much longer though as Grace converted on the next opportunity.

Luis Munoz set up what proved to be the games only goal with a well placed cross into the penalty box. Yanes finally found the back of the net, after threatening numerous times, when he struck the crossed ball in mid air and sliced it past the keeper to push the Lancers ahead late in the half.

The lead was nearly doubled soon thereafter when Munoz rang one off the crossbar. Grace was unable to jump on the rebound though and the game entered the half with Grace leading 1-0.

Grace had nine shots in the opening 45 compared to Graceland's three. The Lancers had all four of the corner kicks. There were 17 fouls at halftime.

The Yellow Jackets began to find some offensive consistency in the second half having their first stint of sustained pressure in the opening 10 minutes of the second stanza.

The Lancers responded well however, and threatened to extend their lead with three consecutive corner kicks in close order.

Grace was unable to convert on the chances but the intensity of the contest became apparent as both teams were given a yellow card after a collision in the box.

Graceland began to pepper the Lancers with shots late in the half but Grace's defense was superb in their defense of goal, allowing just one shot on goal for the entire game.

As the game came to a close it was Grace who had the final chances on net as Munoz and Miguel Cacahua each forced a save late as Grace held on for the 1-0 win.

Grace finished the game with 15 shots and six on goal while Graceland finished with nine and one. Corner kicks were 8-3 in favor of the Lancers. Pedro Galante picked up the clean sheet win in goal.

The Lancers will now travel east to Rio Grande, Ohio to play a pair of teams in the Top 25 Coaches' Poll. Grace will play No. 22 Rio Grande on Saturday and RV Cumberland on September 1.
