Volleyball wins twice in tourney finale

MISHAWAKA, Ind. - Grace's volleyball team collected two more wins to wrap up the Michiana Mayhem tournament at Bethel on Saturday.

The Lancers (7-5) sank Defiance in the morning 3-1 before sweeping IU East to wrap up the day.

Grace's offense overwhelmed Defiance in Saturday morning's match. Grace amassed 58 kills in the four-set win, hitting at a .245 percentage as a team.

Defiance won the opening set by three points as the Lancers endured their least efficient set (10 attack errors).

In the second set, Grace used five unanswered points to even the score at 15s but still trailed 20-17. The Lancers again rattled off five straight points to jump ahead, aided by two blocks and a kill from Livia Tate. Grace rode that wave to a 25-22 win to even the match.

Grace was dominant in the third set, producing 14 kills on a .440 percentage. The Lancers rolled to a 25-13 victory.

The teams traded small turns with the lead during the fourth set, and Grace pulled in front 23-20 after a kill by Callie Jo Celichowski.

Defiance then sparked to life with four points in a row, threatening to take the set with a 24-23 lead.

But a kill by Celichowski was followed up with back-to-back kills from Olivia Martinez, punctuating a 26-24 extra-points win to clinch the match.

Celichowski had a team-high 12 kills (.360 percentage) to go along with five block assists, and Tate tallied eight kills (.368 percentage) with seven block assists.

Leah Henderson produced 11 kills (.333 percentage) and five block assists, Martinez had a double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs, and Levyn Snow added eight kills and three block assists.

Carsyn Witt handed out 46 assists with 14 digs, Liz Schmidt amassed a match-best 23 digs, Emma Blackford had 12 digs and two aces, and Reagan Owens chipped in eight digs and an ace.

Grace made quick work of IU East in the afternoon. The Lancers enjoyed an efficient offensive outing with 32 kills on a .247 percentage for the match.

The Lancers kicked off the match with an eight-point win in set one. Livia Tate had three kills late in the set to polish off the Red Wolves.

The second set was much closer. It was Anna Elkin this time sparking Grace as the sophomore pounded out four late kills, and Grace won 25-23.

The Red Wolves had no answer for the Lancers in the third set. Grace won by 10, benefitting from a 9-0 run early in the set to coast to victory.

Witt (16 assists) and Reese McCutchan (9 assists) shared setting duties in the win, and Schmidt again led all players with 16 digs. Celichowski had 6 kills, 1 solo block and 5 block assists, and Molly Hofmann collected four kills.

The Lancers will end the regular season with 18 straight Crossroads League matches. Grace will begin at home for the team's home opener on Wednesday. The Lancers will host the defending NAIA champions No. 1 Indiana Wesleyan on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
