UPLAND, Ind. - Grace's volleyball team tangled with another Top-25 opponent on Wednesday night, traveling to No. 22 Taylor.
The Trojans (11-4, 2-1 Crossroads League) won in a hard-fought match, beating Grace 3-1.
Grace's offense could not keep pace with Taylor; the Trojans had 57 kills in the match on a .283 percentage, while Grace had 11 fewer kills and was held to a .121 percentage.
Taylor jumped out to a fast 4-0 lead in the opening set, and Grace never recovered. The Lancers trailed by seven early (10-3) and could not make up the difference, eventually falling 25-14.
Grace found revenge in the second set. The score was deadlocked at 17s, but a kill from Anna Elkin and a block from Leah Henderson and Abby Leffring gave Grace a two-point edge. Elkin soon after provided back-to-back kills, and Livia Tate and Leffring added another as Grace closed out the set 25-22 to even the match.
The Lancers' offense was at its quietest in the third set, however. Grace was held to seven kills and seven errors as a team.
Taylor used a 9-1 run midway into the set to seize control, easing away to a 12-point win.
In the fourth set, Grace scored the first four points. Reagan Owens had an early ace, and Henderson kicked off the set with a kill.
Grace maintained a slight lead throughout the early portions until Taylor rattled off five straight points to pull ahead.
The teams traded small runs as Taylor opened up a 19-14 lead only for Grace to slash the lead to one with four unanswered points. Olivia Martinez had two kills during that spurt, and Liz Schmidt aced.
But Grace's offense lost steam over the final rallies. Grace managed two more kills over the last nine rallies, and Taylor clinched the match 25-21 with two block points.
Henderson impressed offensively for Grace with 11 kills on a .450 percentage, and Martinez racked up eight kills with a team-high 20 digs.
Elkin posted 10 kills, 7 digs and 2 block assists, Tate had nine kills and four block assists, and Leffring added 7 kills, 1 solo block and 1 block assist.
Carsyn Witt earned a double-double with 39 assists and 16 digs, and Schmidt added 13 digs.
The Lancers will return home on Saturday, welcoming No. 23 Spring Arbor to the MOCC for a 1 p.m. match.
