Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Grace Cruises Past Jaguars

WINONA LAKE, Ind. - Grace College's men's soccer team used three-unanswered goals on Wednesday night to beat Governors State 3-1.

The Lancers (5-1-2), who were just ranked No. 22 in the NAIA Top 25 Coaches' Poll, have now won four consecutive games all of which have been at home.

The Lancers did concede the first goal in the matchup, ending a shutout streak of 305 consecutive minutes.

The Lancers pressured early in the contests at the behest of Diego Yanes. Yanes had a shot on goal in the fourth minute of the game that was saved by the Jaguar keeper and less than two minutes later rattled the crossbar with another try.

Governors State played a physical brand of soccer in the first half to limit the Lancers' scoring chances and were whistled for 12 fouls compared to Graces' four.

With 15 minutes left in the opening half Governors State was awarded a corner kick. The ensuing kick was sent into a mass of humanity in the goal box but inexplicably breezed past the heads and through the legs of numerous players before taking a fortuitous bounce for the Jaguars into the Lancers goal to put GSU ahead 1-0.

Joao Laranjo and Miguel Lourenco each had shots to draw the game back even, but each try was met by the GSU keeper. With under 30 left in the half the Lancers did break through.

Grace was awarded a penalty kick after an illegal tackle in the box. Luis Munoz was chosen to take the PK and after his shot was denied he quickly jumped on the rebound and scored to send the game into the intermission tied at one.

Grace outshot GSU 12-2 in the first half and also held a 4-2 corner kick advantage.

Grace continued to be the clear aggressor in the second half. The Lancers had the first seven shots of the final frame.

In the 70th minute Juan Garcia sent in a corner and Diego Yanes headed it into goal to give the Lancers the 2-0 lead. The Lancers added an insurance marker seven minutes later.

Joao Parreira chipped a pass to Yanes who dribbled around a defender and then the goalkeeper before kicking the ball into the empty net to push Grace ahead  3-1.

Pedro Galante, who got the start in goal, made his only save of the game in the waning second to help Grace secure the 3-1 win.

The Lancers finished the game with an impressive 21-5 edge in shots including a 9-2 edge in shots on goal. Grace was whistled for 10 fouls compared to the Jaguars 19.

Grace will close out the non-conference portion of the schedule on Saturday when they host Holy Cross at 5 p.m.
