MISHAWAKA, Ind. - Grace's volleyball team was unable to pick up a road win on Saturday, losing 3-1 at Bethel.
In the opening set, Grace carved out a slight 9-7 lead before Bethel rattled off seven straight points to take control.
The Lancers did their best to erase the gap; two kills in a row from Leah Henderson and an ace by Carsyn Witt pulled Grace within three.
But the Pilots held Grace without another kill over the final nine rallies, winning 25-19. Grace had five kills and eight attack errors in the set.
Grace found itself in an early 10-5 hole to start the second set. The Lancers erupted with six unanswered points to propel ahead, sparked by an ace and a kill from Olivia Martinez.
The teams traded points until the final stretch; Grace led 22-21 after a block and a kill from Livia Tate, but the Pilots snuck out the win by claiming the final four points in a 25-22 victory.
In the third set, Tate charged Grace to a fast start. She produced two kills and a block on the first three rallies as Grace jumped out to a 6-0 lead.
The Lancers had no trouble holding onto their lead in the set, cruising to a dominant 10-point win (25-15). Grace's offense was at its best in the third set with 16 kills and three errors (.406 percentage).
The fourth set was fiercely contested. Neither side generated a big lead as the teams exchanged small runs.
Two kills in a row from Molly Hofmann pushed Grace in front 21-19, forcing a Bethel timeout. Out of the break, Bethel seized momentum with four straight points, including three aces.
Hofmann earned two more kills over the last four rallies, but the damage was done as the Pilots held on to win 25-23 to take the match in four sets.
Hofmann finished with nine kills in two sets on a .438 percentage. Fellow freshman Levyn Snow led Grace with 10 kills and four block assists.
Henderson had eight kills and a pair of block assists, Martinez notched six kills and 17 digs, Abby Leffring tallied four kills and four block assists, and Tate notched 4 kills, 1 solo block and 3 block assists.
Witt posted 23 assists and 13 digs, Liz Schmidt earned a team-high 22 digs, and Reese McCutchan added nine assists and 13 digs.
The Lancers will return home on Wednesday for a 6 p.m. match against Mt. Vernon Nazarene.
