WINONA LAKE, Ind. - Grace College's men's soccer team extended their winning streak to five games with a 3-0 win over Holy Cross on Saturday afternoon.
The contest was the Lancers final of their non-conference slate, as they are set to begin Crossroads League action on Wednesday night. Grace went 6-1-2 in the first half of the season with draws against No. 4 Cumberlands, No. 22 Rio Grande and win over No. 12 Indiana Tech.
Ben Kenn got the start in goal for the Lancers but he saw very little action as Grace was on the attack from the opening whistle.
Twice in the opening 15 minutes the Lancers seemed to net the game's first marker, but each goal was called back because of a close offsides call. Grace held a 6-0 shot advantage 30 minutes into the half.
When Grace did eventually score they opened the floodgates, scoring all three of the contest's goals in nine minutes.
The Lancers' first goal came off the head of
Mateus Pereira. From the middle of the pitch,
Sebastian Lozano played a long ball into the corner where
Juan Garcia chased it down and crossed it into the box. Pereira timed his jump perfectly and headed the ball into goal to give Grace the 1-0 advantage.
Grace's second goal came four minutes later and was again scored by Pereira. This time Pereira took advantage of a failed clearance from the Saints and was able to make a clean strike on the ball amongst a throng of players. The Holy Cross keeper was screened and stood no chance as the ball ripped past him to push Grace's lead to two goals.
With under a minute left the Lancers would score again.
Vasco Montez redirected an attempted clear right to the feet of
Luis Munoz who wasted little time in firing the ball into goal to give the Lancers a 3-0 lead entering the intermission.
The Lancers held a 10-0 shot advantage and a 4-1 corner kick advantage at the half.
With the game seemingly in hand the second half played out more evenly.
Holy Cross finally recorded their first shot 49 minutes into the game, but
Ben Kenn was up to the task nullifying the chance.
Joao Parreira and
Diego Yanes came close to adding to the Lancer lead but all three attempts were thwarted by a save.
A pair of yellow cards in quick succession saw the Lancers go a man down for the 14 minutes of the game.
The disadvantage didn't seem to bother Grace however, as the lancers continued to possess the ball at an impressive rate.
The Saints had one final chance to break the shutout late in the game but the shot on goal was blocked by the backline of Grace's defense as Grace preserved the shutout for Kenn.
Kenn is now the third different goalie for Grace this year to record a shutout victory.
The Lancers ended the game with a 15-5 shot advantage, including a 11-1 advantage for shots on goal. Grace had six corner kicks while Holy Cross had two.
Grace will be back in action on Wednesday at 8 p.m. as the start conference play by hosting St. Francis.
