Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Lancers Continue Winning Ways with Dramatic Victory

Huntington, Ind. - Grace College's men's soccer team continues to show a flair for the dramatic as they used another late goal in the second half to top Huntington 2-1 on Saturday afternoon.

In addition to extending the Lancers (8-1-2, 2-0 Crossroads league) win streak to seven games, the victory also has Grace sitting alone atop the conference standings.

Early in Saturday's contest, the Foresters (2-5-3, 0-2 CL) had what proved to be their only corner kick opportunity of the game, but were unable to produce a shot off the attempt.

The Lancers had the first shot attempt of the game off the foot of Teague Misner but his try sailed over goal.

The first half divulged into a midfield battle with neither side able to produce credible sustained pressure.

At the halftime intermission both teams had just two shot attempts and the Foresters had the only corner kick of the opening 45 minutes.

As the second half got underway, the game took on a much more frenzied pace. Pedro Galante made an early save on Huntington and Grace went the length of the pitch on the counter attack.

Luis Munoz then tried a shot on goal that was blocked but bounced back to his feet and his second attempt was true as his shot beat the keeper to push Grace ahead 1-0.

Huntington responded in quick order with a trio of shots, but the Lancers defense stood stout, preventing all three shots from making it on goal.

With 25 minutes left Juan Garcia crossed a ball into the box off of a corner kick and Maxime Bregeon got a shot off but it trailed wide. Diego Yanes had a shot a few minutes later but his chance was denied by the keeper.

As the clock ticked under 10 minutes the Foresters broke up the shutout with a goal that tied the game and threatened to send Grace home with a tie.

Only two minutes later though, Grace responded. Misner had a corner kick and the ever dangerous Vasco Tavares headed the cross into goal to recapture the lead for the Lancers.

The deflated Foresters  were unable to generate another scoring chance in the final moments as Grace went on to win 2-1.

The Lancers finished the game with a commanding advantage in shots (13-7) and corner kicks (6-1).

Grace will be back in action on Wednesday night at 8 p.m. as they host No. 11 IWU.
