Lancers pull away from Maple Leafs

GOSHEN, Ind. - Grace's men's basketball team racked up its 19th consecutive victory with a 104-83 win at Goshen on Saturday.

The No. 1 Lancers (19-0, 9-0 Crossroads League) used another balanced performance to ease away from Goshen.

Grace had nine players score at least seven points against the Maple Leafs (7-12, 0-9 CL).

Grace came up empty on its first four possessions, allowing Goshen to start in front.

But a layup from Hunter Walston and a 3-pointer from Tyler Raasch tied the score a few minutes into the game.

Not long afterwards, Walston scored five quick points to push Grace ahead 12-10.

The score remained close for the next several minutes with each team earning a slight edge.

Grace found itself behind 27-25 with eight minutes remaining, but Grace's defense clamped down Goshen to end the half.

The Maple Leafs were held to just five more points over the final 8:03 of the half, and Grace took advantage with a decisive 22-5 run.

Back-to-back scores from Walston and Gage Sefton put Grace in front for good.

The Lancers rattled off 11 unanswered points over the final 2:42. Luke Bricker capped off the half with a 3-pointer in the final seconds, handing Grace a 47-32 lead as the game reached halftime.

Grace shot 55 percent from the floor in the half, including 6 of 10 on 3-pointers.

Walston was an offensive force, producing 16 points on 7 of 10 shooting.

In the second half, an early 8-1 spurt allowed the Lancers to open up a 20-point cushion at 57-37.

At the midway mark of the half, Gavin Betten and Tyler Raasch canned 3-pointers as Grace led comfortably 78-54.

Grace led by as many as 27 and was never threatened again by the Maple Leafs in the rout.

The Lancers began subbing out the starting lineup with 14 minutes remaining; Grace's bench accounted for 46 points.

Ten players for Grace played at least 15 minutes with 14 players seeing the court overall. Ethan Hendrix made his collegiate debut on Saturday for the Lancers.

Grace finished the game with 54 points in the paint and had a 45-35 advantage in rebounding.

The Lancers made 58 percent of their field goals; Grace shot 11 of 21 (52 percent) from the 3-point line.

Walston finished with 18 points (8 of 12 shooting), 6 rebounds, 3 assists and 1 blocked shot.

Betten notched 15 points, 8 boards, 3 assists and 1 block, Ian Raasch had 13 points, 3 rebounds and 2 blocks, and Tyler Raasch added 12 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 block.

Cole Hayworth shot 4 for 4 from the floor, racking up 11 points and two steals in seven minutes.

Sefton flirted with a double-double (8 points, 8 rebounds), Isaac Schultz produced 7 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 block, and Grady Carpenter added seven points with two assists.

Bricker drilled a trio of 3-pointers for nine points, and Caleb Herrold chipped in two points and two assists.

The Lancers are on the road again in one week, traveling to No. 23 Taylor on Jan. 24. Grace's next home game is Jan. 28 against St. Francis.
