Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Offensive woes hand Grace its first loss

HUNTINGTON, Ind. - A near-historic winning streak came to an end on Saturday for Grace's men's basketball team.

The No. 1 Lancers fell in overtime 72-65 at Huntington, snapping Grace's 21-game winning streak to start the year.

The Lancers (21-1, 11-1 Crossroads League) produced their second-best start to a season in program history, second only to a 24-game perfect start in 2023-24.

The Lancers suffered their lowest offensive output of the season on Saturday afternoon. Grace's 65 points mark the fewest points scored this year.

Grace's 36.9-percent shooting performance was also the team's lowest of the season by over 11 percent. It was Grace's first time shooting under 40 percent as a team and just the third time shooting less than 50 percent from the floor.

Ian Raasch helped Grace to a strong start on Saturday, scoring Grace's first four points, including a transition slam dunk.

The Lancers jumped out to a 10-2 lead; Grace's suffocating defense resulted in a series of fastbreak scores.

The Foresters responded with six points, but Michael Wellman helped end the short skid with a ferocious dunk.

Grace's defense was relentless over the first 10 minutes; HU made just 3 of 18 (17 percent) from the floor. That effort allowed Grace to overcome an 0-for-6 start on 3-pointers for the Lancers.

Cannen Houser provided a boost, scoring a clever reverse layup and hammering home a breakaway dunk.

But while Grace's defense gave Huntington fits, the Lancers found troubles of their own scoring consistently during a physical contest.

Grace committed nine turnovers in the opening half. The Foresters (17-5, 8-4 CL) took advantage to take a late 25-20 lead.

Gage Sefton helped the Lancers settle, scoring an and-1 and hitting two free throws.

Grace hit its first 3-pointer with 35 seconds remaining in the half — a deep triple from Hunter Walston which helped Grace to a one-point edge.

The Lancers took that slight 28-27 lead into halftime. Grace shot only 38 percent from the floor but held HU to 29 percent. Sefton's nine points at the break led all players.

The teams played evenly for the first few minutes of the second half, but a 10-3 run pushed the Foresters ahead 47-40 with 9:39 on the clock.

Offense was difficult to find for the Lancers; Grace hit an untimely drought, going scoreless for nearly six minutes.

The Lancers saw their deficit grow to as many as 11 (51-40) with 7:13 remaining in the game.

Raasch ended the dry spell with a basket, and Grace's defense sparked a rally.

The Foresters endured their own six-minute drought next, opening the door for Grace to recover.

Walston, Sefton and Raasch attacked the paint, helping the Lancers claw back. Eventually Raasch tied the game 53-53 with 1:16 on the clock.

Grace forced a missed shot on the next possession, and Raasch calmly scored in the paint again to push the Lancers ahead by two with 46 seconds remaining.

The Foresters answered with a game-tying basket, and Grace came up empty on a potential go-ahead shot in the waning seconds, sending the game to overtime.

The overtime began well for Grace as Gavin Betten converted an and-1 on the Lancers' first possession.

But the Lancers came up empty on their next four possessions, which coincided with a hot stretch from HU.

The Foresters scored on their final nine possessions of overtime, racking up 17 points in the five-minute extra period. Grace's attack could not match that output, resulting in the Lancers' first defeat in more than 10 months.

Raasch posted 19 points, 7 rebounds and 2 assists, and Sefton notched 14 points, 6 boards and 2 assists.

Walston produced a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, Wellman had nine points with three steals, Betten tallied 5 points, 3 rebounds, 2 steals and 1 block, and Houser had four points with two assists.

The Lancers have two games next week. Grace will play Spring Arbor at home on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. and will travel to Mt. Vernon Nazarene on Saturday at 3 p.m.
