Men’s Basketball cruises by Marian

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Grace's men's basketball team showcased its electric offense with a 91-62 win at Marian on Wednesday.

The No. 1 Lancers (16-0, 6-0 Crossroads League) maintained their unblemished start to the year.

Grace placed five players in double-digit scoring, shooting 52 percent as a team.

To start the game, Gage Sefton buried a 3-pointer on Grace's first possession. But the Lancers needed four minutes to score again.

Marian rattled off eight straight points to open up a slight lead.

Grace's offense began to find life thanks to lethal 3-point shooting from the bench. Cannen Houser and Michael Wellman combined for a trio of 3-pointers in the span of 68 seconds; Grace quickly tied the score.

The 3-point barrage helped soften Marian's zone defense. With 10 minutes left in the half, Luke Bricker canned another triple to hand Grace a 21-18 advantage.

Grace used stingy defense to build on its lead. The Lancers kept Marian scoreless for nearly four minutes, opening up an eight-point edge.

Wellman put an exclamation mark on Grace's spurt with nine points off the bench, including a driving layup while being fouled.

With four minutes remaining before halftime, Hunter Walston swished back-to-back treys as Grace claimed a double-digit lead.

That was the beginning of a massive surge to close the half. Grace blitzed Marian down the stretch with an 18-2 run.

The Lancers sprinted into halftime with a comfortable 49-28 lead. Grace made its final eight shot attempts of the half.

Grace shot 57 percent overall from the floor in the half, including 8 of 12 (67 percent) from downtown.

The Lancers' bench (25 points) nearly outscored Marian in the half thanks to nine points apiece from Houser and Wellman.

The second half was much of the same. Grace scored in bunches, using 3-pointers and sharp passing to create clean shots.

The lead hovered in the 20s throughout the half, allowing Grace to utilize its bench.

The reserves continued to balloon Grace's margin, leading by as many as 29 at the final buzzer.

Wellman tied for scoring honors with 16 points, hitting a pair of 3s. Walston collected 13 points, 6 rebounds and 2 assists, and Houser made all four of his 3-pointers for 12 points while passing out four assists.

Ian Raasch flirted with a triple-double, posting 11 points, 8 assists, 7 rebounds and 2 steals, and Gavin Betten added 10 points and six rebounds in 16 minutes.

Bricker tallied five points with three assists, Isaac Schultz had four points and four rebounds, Caleb Herrold scored five, and Cole Hayworth added three points and three boards.

The Lancers will end the week with a marquee matchup. Grace will travel to No. 10 Indiana Wesleyan on Saturday for a 3 p.m. top-10 showdown.
