WINONA LAKE, Ind. - Grace's men's basketball team erupted offensively on Wednesday night, topping Marian 94-63.
The No. 2 Lancers (23-2, 13-2 Crossroads League) scored 54 points after halftime. Grace shot an eye-popping 71 percent from the floor in an impressive display.
The win sets up a massive home game for Grace on Saturday. The Lancers will face off with No. 3 Indiana Wesleyan on Saturday at 3 p.m. Grace leads IWU by one game in the league standings.
In the first half, the Lancers' passing created easy baskets. But Grace also turned the ball over frequently.Â
Grace had 13 assists on 16 made field goals in the half, including five assists from Grady Carpenter. But Grace also amassed 10 turnovers.
Grace's defense gave Marian fits. The Knights struggled to score, shooting just 28 percent. Grace blocked five shots in the half.
Marian did make four 3-pointers, but it was not enough to keep pace with Grace.
Tyler Raasch helped Grace to a strong finish. The freshman scored Grace's final seven points of the half, capped off with a 3-pointer. Grace took a 40-29 lead into halftime.
Raasch led Grace with 11 points at the break. Grace shot 70 percent from the floor as a team, aided by scoring 26 points in the paint.
The Lancers also had 13 fastbreak points and a 15-5 advantage in paint points, powered by seven points from Michael Wellman and six more from Gavin Betten. The duo shot a combined 6 of 6 from the floor in the half.
Grace needed more than three minutes to score in the second half. Marian scored four points in the process to trim the Lancers' lead down to seven at 40-33.
The Lancers stormed to life soon afterwards, scoring eight straight points with four coming from Gage Sefton.
With 10:29 remaining in the game, Betten's two free throws pushed Grace's lead to 17 (62-45).
A few minutes later, Grace rattled off 12 unanswered points to blow open the game.
Hunter Walston and Carpenter each hit triples during the run as Grace charged ahead 80-51.
The Lancers began removing their starters with six minutes to play, and the substitutes continued Grace's strong play.
The night reached an exclamation point with a fastbreak, alley-oop dunk by Cole Hayworth in the final minute.
The Lancers made 34 of their 48 field goals in the game (71 percent), including 7 of 14 on 3s. Grace also found the mark at the free throw line, making 19 of 23 (83 percent).
Marian sputtered by making 33 percent from the floor.
Raasch led all players with 20 points, 9 rebounds, 4 blocks and 2 assists, shooting 7 of 9 from the floor.
Wellman shot 5 of 7 overall for 15 points, and Betten made 6 of 7 and finished with 14 points, 5 boards and 3 assists.
Sefton notched 13 points, 4 boards and 2 steals. He made all five of his field goals and all three of his free throws.
Cannen Houser racked up 7 points, 7 assists and 3 rebounds, Ian Raasch had seven points, and Carpenter added five points and five assists. Hayworth scored six points in eight minutes.
