MISHAWAKA, Ind. - Grace's men's basketball team and Bethel tangled in another classic Crossroads League matchup on Wednesday night.
The short-handed Lancers, playing without their top scorer, came up short 85-73 on the road in a top-10 battle.
The No. 2 Lancers (24-3, 14-3 Crossroads League) struggled with their outside shooting, making 24 percent of their attempts (7 of 29).
The No. 11 Pilots (22-5, 12-5 CL), on the other hand, made well over half of their 3-point tries (53 percent).
The Lancers will end the regular season at home on Saturday against Goshen at 3 p.m. Grace has already locked up a share of the CL regular season title; a win on Saturday would give Grace the regular-season title outright.
Wednesday's game began evenly with the teams trading baskets. Seven minutes into the half, Bethel used a pair of 3-pointers to fuel an 8-0 run, pulling ahead 17-10.
Grace countered with three straight layups from Cannen Houser, Gage Sefton and Gavin Betten.
But the Pilots' 3-point marksmanship continued to plague Grace. Bethel buried two more triples in short succession, opening up a 27-18 lead.
Grace's offense in the first half often ran through Tyler Raasch, who was a force on both ends of the court. He scored six points in a row for Grace to help slice the deficit down to four.
Raasch swished a 3-pointer with 2:21 remaining, bringing Grace to within two.
Grady Carpenter ended Grace's first-half scoring with a layup in the waning seconds, but Bethel still held a 44-40 lead at halftime.
Raasch led all players with 15 points at halftime, making all six shots. He also swatted five shots.
Grace shot 50 percent from the floor but made just 4 of 13 on 3s. Bethel made 47 percent of their field goals but hit 5 of 7 on 3-pointers (71 percent).
Bethel began the second half with seven unanswered points to open up an 11-point edge.
Hunter Walston broke the streak with two layups in a row. Shortly afterwards, Sefton scored five straight points to bring Grace within four.
The teams traded points over the next several scrappy minutes. Grace scored mostly in the paint while Bethel often seemed to find a timely 3-pointer to keep the lead.
The Pilots edged in front by nine 69-60 with eight minutes to go; a trio of free throws from Caleb Herrold helped trim the score to four.
But Grace's poor shooting prevented the Lancers from completing a comeback. The Lancers encountered a scoring drought stretching nearly five minutes.
Bethel took advantage and put the game out of reach.
Grace missed eight of its first nine 3-pointers in the half before making two in the final 90 seconds. Grace shot 3 of 16 (19 percent) from downtown in the second half.
Raasch led Grace with 16 points, 10 rebounds and 6 blocks, and Sefton tallied 15 points and six rebounds.
Walston amassed 11 points, 6 boards and 4 assists, Luke Bricker scored 10 points off the bench, Betten had eight points and four boards, and Carpenter collected 4 points, 7 assists, 3 rebounds and 2 steals.
