Lancers split pair with Titans

JASPER, Ind. - Grace's baseball team took one of two against IU South Bend on Friday afternoon.

The Lancers won the opener 9-3 before IUSB responded with a 10-2 win in the second game.

In the opener, IUSB jumped ahead with a two-out home run in the top of the second inning.

Grace immediately countered in the bottom of the inning. The Lancers loaded the bases with two outs thanks to two hit batsmen and a walk. Gabriel Maldonado drew a walk to tie the score, and Carter Stogsdill did the same to give Grace a 2-1 lead.

The third inning was even more action-packed. The Titans regained the lead with two runs in the top of the frame only to see Grace roar back.

In the bottom of the third, Matt Friesema set the tone with a leadoff home run to center field. Cayden Calloway and Jose Ayala followed that up with back-to-back doubles as Grace took the lead for good. Ayala eventually scored on a bunt by Will Ambrose, and Stogsdill's single brought in Grant Rojek to push the Lancers' lead to 6-3.

The Lancers tacked on three more runs across the fifth and sixth innings to put the game out of reach.

Tyler Sarver was sharp in relief. He pitched the final 4.1 innings, yielding no runs and two hits with five strikeouts.

Stogsdill tallied 1 hit, 1 walk, 1 stolen base, 1 run and 2 RBIs from the leadoff position. Friesema and Ayala each had 2 hits, 2 runs and 1 RBI, and Rojek walked twice and scored twice.

In the second game, the Titans again struck first. IUSB used a two-run homer in the top of the first to jump ahead.

The Titans used another home run in the third inning to build a bigger cushion.

Grace got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth; Mayo Fernandez doubled and eventually came home on a ground ball from Ayala.

But the Lancers were unable to generate enough scoring in the defeat. Mason Wire added Grace's final tally with a solo home run in the seventh inning.

The Lancers will wrap up their four-game stint with IUSB on Saturday, starting the doubleheader at 11 a.m.
