WINONA LAKE, Ind. - Grace College's women's basketball team capped off the regular season with an 86-82 win over Goshen on Saturday night.
The contest was also senior day for the Lancers (12-16) as they honored
Bekah Longenbaugh,
Molly Long and
Hailey Maulbetsch.
With the win the Lancers secured their spot in the Crossroads League tournament they will play Marian on Tuesday night at 6 p.m.
Grace got off to a sluggish start falling behind 6-0 before a trifecta from
Emma Sperry got the Lancers on the board. Sperry had the Lancers' first seven points of the contest and Grace edged ahead 9-7 thanks to a score from
Becca Gerdt.
After taking the lead the Lancers caught fire from the field. Grace went on a 12-0 run to blitz ahead 21-9.
Gerdt made her presence felt in the paint with a pair of physical layups then hit a jump shot just before the buzzer to give the Lancers a 34-17 lead at the quarter break.
Goshen had the first two scores of the second frame but a 3-point field goal from
Morganne Houk quickly halted their momentum.
Sperry had a pair of shots from beyond the arc in close succession as the Lancers continued to roll.
Grace's lead reached as many as 20 points and the Lancers led 53-35 at the half.
Grace shot at a 53 percent clip in the opening half while Goshen knocked in 36 percent of their shots.
Grace held a 25-18 advantage on the boards and a 20-8 edge on points scored off of turnovers.
Grace hit a pair of 3-point field goals from
Maddy Poynter and Longenbaugh and then Sperry added one of her own as Grace pushed 64-41.
The Maple Leafs trimmed the lead as they went an efficient 58 percent from the floor in the quarter, pulling back to within 15 points.
Grace added another late score this time from Sperry who drilled a 3-point shot as time expired to give Grace a 77-59 lead entering the final frame.
The fourth quarter saw Goshen mount a ferocious comeback. Grace's only field goal of the frame came with 4:08 left when Poynter nailed a 3-point shot.
The Maple Leafs continued to claw back and with 33 seconds left had pulled within a point.
Grace held firm however as Poynter made three free throws and picked up a crucial steal to secure the 86-84 win for the Lancers.
"This was a really solid way to end the regular season," commented Grace head coach
Dan Davis. "I thought we looked really sharp for three quarters and Goshen made some adjustments in the fourth quarter. Credit to our girls for fighting until the very end."
Sperry led all players with 31 points and Poynter double-doubled with 23 points and 12 rebounds. Houk narrowly missed a triple double with 11 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds.
