INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Grace College's women's basketball team saw its season in the quarterfinals of the Crossroads League Tournament.
The Lancers (12-17) were facing the top-seeded Marian Knights and were unable to pull the upset, falling 102-54. The game was the final in the careers of Lancers
Molly Long and
Bekah Longenbaugh.
Emma Sperry had the first six points for the Lancers with a pair of 3-point field goals.
Braylin Terrell was persistent on the offensive glass and scored on a second chance but the Knights red-hot shooting had them ahead 20-8 at the midpoint of the frame.
Late in the first quarter
Maddy Poynter scored through contact and converted her shot at the charity stripe and on Grace's next possession
Morganne Houk buried a 3-point field goal.
A late score from Sperry had the Lancers down 33-17 at the quarter break.
The second frame got off to a sluggish start for both squads. Marian managed just two made shots through the first four minutes. The Lancers went scoreless for the first 5:48.
The Lancers shot 22 percent in the quarter and saw their deficit grow to 27 by the halftime intermission.
Grace had five less turnovers than Marian in the first half but shot 22 percent compared to the Knights' 50 percent and were out rebounded 37-13.
Becca Gerdt had Grace's first five points of the second half but Marian continued to extend their lead. Sperry hit a shot from beyond the arc then had scored another 3-point play the old-fashioned way.
Sperry drilled another jumper as time was winding down in the frame giving Grace 38 points entering the final quarter.
Poynter scored a layup then added another at the charity stripe to start the fourth and final frame.
Longenbaugh scored a trifecta then Sperry stole the ball and Houk broke free for a fast break score.
The final six Lancer points came at the free-throw line, including a trio from
Abbie Ritzema and one from Long.
Grace finished the game shooting 27 percent while Marian hit at a 53 percent rate. Both teams had 15 turnovers and Grace was out rebounded 66-34. The Knights also held a 72-26 advantage on points in the paint.
Sperry led Grace with 18 points while Houk added 10. Gerdt had 11 rebounds.
