Offense runs dry in loss to No. 18 Cougars

WINONA LAKE, Ind. - Grace College's women's basketball team fell to No. 18 Spring Arbor 100–35 On Wednesday night.

Grace (10-13, 2-11 Crossroads League) struggled to find an offensive rhythm in the contest and was unable to keep pace with the ranked Cougars.

Offense was hard to come by in the first half for Grace. The Lancers struggled to make shots in the first quarter.

Morganne Houk began the game's scoring with a 3-pointer, but the Lancers did not make another triple until the second quarter.

SAU held a slight 10-7 lead after four minutes, but Grace's attack went silent for the rest of the quarter. The Lancers mustered just a pair of free throws over the final six minutes of the quarter, allowing SAU to pull ahead.

The Cougars led 27-9 after the first quarter. Grace shot 1 of 11 on 3s in the quarter.

The second quarter had a similar theme. Grace used an early triple from Emma Sperry and a layup from Becca Gerdt to start the scoring.

But the Lancers scored only four points over the final four minutes of the stanza, allowing the Cougars to pull away. SAU scored the final 10 points of the quarter, holding a 50-19 lead at halftime.

Grace shot 21 percent as a team from the floor, committing 14 turnovers. The Cougars scored 22 points off Grace's mistakes.

The Lancers' woes continued into the second half as Grace struggled to find the bottom of the basket. Grace shot just ?? in the frame.

The Cougars scored 22 of the quarters first 24 points, stretching the lead to a commanding margin.

Gerdt and Sperry provided points at the end of the third quarter pushing the Lancers total to 29.

Maddy Poynter, Abbie Ritzema and Ava Yordy all got on the scoresheet in the final frame but Grace was unable to close the gap dropping the season finale to the Cougars.

Grace finished the game shooting 21 percent while the Cougars hit at a 44 percent clip. The Lancers were outrebounded 60-40 and were outscored 39-11 in fastbreak points.

Sperry led Grace with 13 points and Braylin Terrell grabbed 14 rebounds and had four blocks. Gerdt narrowly missed a double double with 10 points and seven rebounds.

Grace will be back in action on Saturday for a road showdown with Mt. Vernon.
