WINONA LAKE, Ind. - Grace College's softball team opened up Crossroads League action with a doubleheader against RV Indiana Wesleyan on Tuesday afternoon.
The Lancers (6-10, 0-2 CL) dropped the opener 9-2 before falling 13-4 to close out the afternoon.
Indiana Wesleyan (9-5, 2-0 CL) struck first in the opening frame and had the bases loaded with one out but the Lancers recorded the final two outs to frame holding the Wildcats to just one run.
The Lancers looked to strike back in the home half of the second inning.
Sage Ladig had a lead-off single and
Halle Nett also appeared to reach safely but was called out because of batter interference after the catchers' throw hit her in the back.
The call stalled the Lancers' momentum and in the third inning the Wildcats added to their lead. IWU scored two runs in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
Grace got on the scoreboard in the fourth inning.
Paige McCorkle had a lead-off single then
Emma Hiss blasted a two-run shot over the right field fence.
Grace got multiple runners on base in the sixth and seventh innings, but the Lancers were unable to plate a run as they fell 9-2.
Hiss pitched all seven innings and
Molly Jones reached base twice.
The Wildcats jumped out to an early lead in game two. IWU scored three runs in the first inning and added nine more in the second.
Ladig started the fourth frame with a walk and was moved over to second after a sacrifice bunt.
Avery Sleeth then doubled down into right field to reach for the second time of the game.
The bases were loaded when
Emme Meyering was walked and
Molly Jones brought in the Lancers run with a ground ball.
Lauren Kirkpatrick then added three more runs with a shot over the left field fence. Grace was unable to get any close though and fell by a final mark of 13-4.
Ladig and Sleeth each reached twice in the contest.
Grace will be back in action on Thursday as they host Goshen for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 3 P.M.
