Game Recap: Baseball |

Grace tripped up by Cougars

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Grace's baseball team came up empty in a doubleheader versus St. Francis on Friday.

The Lancers outhit USF over the course of the day but fell short on the scoreboard 20-3 and 2-1.

In the opener, USF scored all of its runs in two innings. The Cougars rattled off 10 runs in the second inning to seize control of the contest.

Neither side scored over the next three frames.

The Lancers got on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth by loading the bases. A ground ball from Mason Wire allowed Grant Rojek and Matt Friesema to cross home plate.

But USF swiftly responded with another big inning in the bottom of the sixth to push the game out of reach.

Mayo Fernandez led off the seventh with a solo home run, but it was not enough to erase the deficit.

The second game saw the Cougars recover late to steal a win.

The Lancers struck first with a third-inning run. Carter Stogsdill led off with a single and eventually made it to third; he came home thanks to a double from Grant Rojek.

The score remained 1-0 in Grace's favor as the game reached the sixth inning.

The Cougars managed to tie the score with a two-out RBI double in the bottom of the sixth.

Fernandez led off the seventh with a single and was bunted to second base. But Grace was unable to bring him home.

The Cougars then secured the win with a walkoff double in the bottom of the seventh.

Sam Justice threw the first six innings, allowing only two hits with zero walks and one run in a strong showing.

The Lancers and Cougars will end the series on Saturday with the twin bill starting at 1 p.m.
