WINONA LAKE, Ind. - Grace's baseball team walked off not once, but twice in a thrilling, memorable doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon.
The Lancers won both games in dramatic fashion over IU Columbus, claiming 8-6 and 7-5 victories at Tom Roy - UPI Park.
In the opener, the Crimson Pride scored a run in the top of the first, but the Lancers responded by scoring consistently across the next several innings.
In the bottom of the second, Jose Ayala and Cayden Calloway singled back-to-back to plate a run. Calloway later scored off an RBI from Ian Wilson to hand the Lancers the lead.
Grace's lead grew in the third with a sacrifice fly from Matt Friesema to score Grant Rojek. The Lancers opened up a 4-1 advantage thanks to a bases-loaded walk in the fourth frame.
IUC pulled one run back in the fifth inning, but Grace responded with a pair of runs in the sixth to lead 6-2. Friesema produced a two-out, two-run single to give Grace a comfortable four-run edge.
The Crimson Pride had a rally up their sleeves, however. IUC managed to push across four runs in their final at-bats to level the scoreboard at 6-6.
As the home team, Grace had the final say, and the Lancers made good on their opportunity.
Ayala led off the inning with a single. Cayden Calloway immediately brought him home, parking a two-run homer over the left field fence to end the game in walkoff fashion.
Calloway had 2 hits, 3 RBIs and 2 runs scored, and Ayala was 2 for 3 with two runs. Rojek had 2 hits, 2 runs, 1 RBI and 1 walk, and Friesema drove in three runs.
Tyler Sarver pitched well for Grace, giving up one unearned run over three innings of relief. Isaac Roberts collected the win after recording the final three outs of the seventh inning.
The script for the second game was similarly written.
The Crimson Pride opened up a 1-0 lead after one inning, but Grace countered in the third with a sac fly from Calloway to plate Carter Stogsdill.
IUC scored two runs in the top of the fourth, but the Lancers quickly answered with two outs in the bottom of the frame. Stogsdill tied the score in the fourth with a two-out, two-run single.
Over the next two innings, IUC tacked on two more runs. The Crimson Pride opened up a 5-3 lead as the game reached the final inning.
The Lancers had a chance for another dramatic win, and Grace made sure history was repeated.
Mayo Fernandez chopped the lead in half with a leadoff solo homer to begin the bottom of the seventh.
Mason Wire and Darl Gustin followed that up with two singles in a row.
Logan Warren took care of the rest, belting the second walkoff home run of the day for Grace. Warren's blast scored three runs to end the game 7-5 and bring the Lancers spilling out of the dugout in celebration.
Stogsdill impressed by hitting 4 for 4 with two RBIs. Fernandez and Gustin each had two hits, and Wire had 1 hit, 1 run and 2 walks.
Roberts earned his second win of the day from the mound. He threw the final 1.2 innings and did not allow a hit or a run.
