WINONA LAKE, Ind. - Grace College's softball team dropped a pair of contests against RV Indiana Tech on Wednesday afternoon.
The Lancers (4-4) struggled to produce offense in the opener falling 5-0 before dropping a tough-luck loss 5-2 in the second game that was called after five innings due to darkness.
After a scoreless first, the Warriors drew first blood in the top of the second frame to edge ahead 1-0. Â A solo home run to start the top of the third inning doubled their lead as Grace struggled to solve Indiana Tech's Savannah Bravo.
The fourth inning was retired in order for both sides and in the fifth the Warriors added another tally to their total.
Grace got their first base runner of the game in the fifth inning when
Avery Sleeth hit a shallow blooper over second base and the Warriors center fielder was unable to secure the catch.
Indiana Tech added an additional run in the sixth and seventh innings while Grace was retired in order, securing the game for the Warriors 5-0.
Elena Robertson pitched all seven innings in the circle for Grace, striking out three and allowing four earned runs. Sleeth was Grace's lone baserunner in the game.
In the second game the Warriors showed great patience at the plate in the opening frame. The Warriors did not record a hit but worked four walks to grab a 1-0 lead.
Paige McCorkle got the Lancers first hit of the afternoon with a single to left field. She was thrown out trying to steal second as the Lancers were held off the scoreboard.
Chloe Huff struck out two batters in the second and retired the side in order, keeping Grace within a run.
In the home half of the inning Robertson had a one single then was bunted into scoring position. She stole third and
Lauren Kirkpatrick earned her way on base with a walk giving the Lancers' runners on the corners but they were left stranded.
The Warriors doubled their advantage in the third inning but Grace struck back when they had their turn at the plate.
Grace had two outs when
Emme Meyering walked. Huff's hard hit ground ball made its way through the infield and Sage Ladif batted in a run with a shot through the middle.
Robertson then tied the game with an RBI double tying the game at two as the contest entered the fourth inning.
In the fourth inning Grace had retired the first two batters but as darkness began to descend on Coach Phil Dick Field a misplayed fly ball extended the inning and allowed the Warriors to recapture a two run lead. Indiana Tech added another in the fifth to push the lead to 5-2.
In the fifth inning two of Grace's first three batters doubled, bringing the tying run to the plate.
Sage Ladig nearly extended the rally with a single but the Lancer runner was out at the plate after an impressive throw from the Warriors center fielder as the Lancers fell by a final mark of 5-3.
Ladig led Grace with two hits and two RBIs while Robertson had a hit at all three of her at bats.
Grace will now travel to Florida for a six game road trip.
