Game Recap: Softball |

Huff dominant as Lancers Top RV Avila

MELBOURNE, Fla. - Grace College's softball topped RV Avila 2-1 in an extra inning affair on Saturday afternoon.

Saturday continued a stretch of games of six consecutive games for the Lancers (4-7) in which their opponent is in the NAIA top 25 Coaches' Poll.

The Lancers got elite pitching in both games on Saturday, allowing just one run in each of the contests. Grace fell to RV Aquians 1-0 and topped RV Avila 2-1 in eight innings.

Emma Hiss and Chloe Huff combined to allow 12 hits while striking out 13 batters in their combined 14 innings of action.

The morning started against RV Aquinas and the Lancers were the first to threaten. A pair of walks and a passed ball gave Grace runners on second and third with one out, but the Saints survived the frame without surrendering a run.

Hiss got the start in the circle for Grace and went three innings before allowing a run.

Aquinas started the fourth with a double and the Saints advanced her around to score for what proved to be the game's only run.

The Lancers got a runner in scoring position in the sixth and seventh innings, but were unable to plate the tying run as they fell 1-0.

Hiss went the distance and struck out four batters and allowed just one run.

Game two was a pitchers duel as Grace engaged in another low-scoring affair.

In the first inning Hiss and Sage Ladig each singled with two outs but Grace was unable to extend the inning. Huff's dominant performance started with a strikeout in the first inning as the game remained scoreless.

The Eagles drew first blood in the second frame as they took advantage of a lead-off walk, eventually scoring with an RBI double to edge ahead 1-0.

Paige McCorkle helped Grace answer back in the third with a lead-off single. She then promptly moved over into scoring position with a steal of second and was brought in to score off of an RBI from Hiss.

With the game tied Huff continued to display her control, striking out the side in the bottom of the frame.

Grace threatened to take the lead in the fourth inning with a quartet of hits but was unable to cross the go-ahead run.

While Huff shut down the Saint's offense Grace's bats continued to hit but were unable to  produce runs.

With the game tied at one, a lead off single for Aquinas in the bottom of the seventh opened the door for the Saints to steal a victory but Huff struck out the next two batters and a harmless pop out sent the game to extra innings.

Ladig was placed on second to start the extra frame and she was brought around to score when Huff aided her own cause with an RBI double.

Carrying a one-run lead into the bottom of inning Huff slammed the door shut on any hopes of a comeback. She recorded strikeouts for the first two outs and the Saints saw their final hope vanish with a ground  out to second as the Lancers secured the upset victory.

Huff pitched all eight innings, allowing just four hits while striking out nine. She also recorded the game-winning RBI. McCorkle, Hiss and Marly Coan all had three hits. The Lancers finished the game out hitting the Saints 15-4.

Grace will close out their trip south with two more games as they take on Cornerstone and Florida National.
