WINONA LAKE, Ind. - Grace's baseball team opened up a four-game series with No. 25 Huntington on Thursday afternoon. Both games of the twinbill went to the Foresters, 15-0 and 9-7.
The series opener was all Foresters from start to finish en route to a 15-0 victory.
Huntington got on the board with a run in the first inning and tacked on another run an inning later.Â
Over the next three innings, the Foresters plated 12 more runs to put the game out of reach.Â
Grace's batting order was held in check throughout. The lone hit of the game, a double off the bat of
Matt Friesema, came in the first inning.
The Lancers had runners reach base safely in multiple innings via walk or fielding error, but were unable to push a run across. The best chance to produce some offense came in the sixth frame with a walk and a throwing error giving Grace two baserunners with one out, but HU worked out of the jam.
The pitching staff recorded six strikeouts in the game.
Although the Foresters scored first again in game two, Grace responded and held the advantage for much of the game.
Grace scored six unanswered runs over three innings to take its first lead of the day.Â
A three-run second inning started the rally. Back to back singles from Cadyen Calloway and
Jose Ayala. A fielder's choice from
Darl Gustin allowed Calloway to score. The third error of the inning allowed Ayala to score. A perfectly executed squeeze bunt by
Logan Warren plated the third run.
An inning later,
Cayden Calloway launched a solo home run for the fourth run.
Grace used the longball again in the fourth, this time a two-run shot from
Mason Wire to extend the lead to 6-1.
After giving up a run in the first inning,
Bryce Berkemeier settled in on the mound. He put together four solid innings of one-run work on the mound. In the fifth, however, the Foresters started to build momentum and loaded the bases to chase him from the game. Six runs in the inning flipped the script, putting HU back on top 7-6.
The Lancers found another rebuttal in the home half of the fifth when Calloway hit a sacrifice fly to right, scoring
Mayo Fernandez to draw the game level.
After a scoreless sixth, Huntington punched through with a pair of runs in the seventh. A 1-2-3 bottom of seventh allowed the Foresters to escape with the 9-7 victory.Â
Calloway led the way for Grace with 2 hits, 2 RBIs and 2 runs. Wire added 2 RBIs, 1 hit and 1 run.Â
The teams will conclude the series with a doubleheader on April 11 at Tom Roy - UPI Park. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
