WINONA LAKE, Ind. - Grace's baseball team fell short against Marian in a twin bill on Saturday.
The Lancers lost 14-11 and 11-1 on a cool, wet afternoon.
In the opener, Marian struck first on the scoreboard, using a two-out, two-run home run to take the lead in the second inning.
Grace pulled back a run in the third; Jose Ayala and Darl Gustin sent back-to-back doubles to the outfield to score Grace's opening run.
But the Lancers' scoring dried up for the rest of the game. Grace was unable to string together hits.
Marian took advantage to pull away. The Knights used extra-base hits, including three home runs, to score 14 runs in the game. MU ended the game early due to the run rule after seven innings.
The Knights' power hitting continued into the second game as Marian's three-run homer in the first put the visitors ahead.
Grace had opportunities to rally with several baserunners early. The Lancers had multiple baserunners in the second and third innings, but Grace was unable to find a timely hit to score a run. Grace stranded five runners over the first three innings.
Marian edged in front by six runs after the fourth inning; the Knights tacked on five more in the seventh, and Grace could not respond.
For the game, Matt Friesema had two walks and a hit, and Stogsdill walked twice and stole a base.
Cayden Calloway had a double and an RBI, and Gabriel Maldonado had 1 hit, 1 walk, 1 stolen base and 1 run.
The Lancers and Knights will finish their series on Monday at 1 p.m. for the final doubleheader of the year at Tom Roy - UPI Park.
