Game Recap: Baseball |

Grace ends year with win over Pilots

MISHAWAKA, Ind. - Grace's baseball team wrapped up the 2026 season with a win over Bethel on Saturday.

The Lancers' final Crossroads League game of the season was a rousing 14-5 victory over the Pilots.

The teams split the four-game series 2-2 and finished tied in the regular season standings, but the Pilots held the tiebreaker and grabbed the eighth and final seed in next week's CL Tournament.

Bethel won Saturday's opener narrowly by the score of 9-7. The Pilots scored three runs in the second, which Grace gradually erased.

In the fourth inning, a triple from Grant Rojek and a single from Matt Friesema scored Grace's first run.

The fifth inning saw doubles from Mason Wire and Rojek produce a run, and Mayo Fernandez's sacrifice fly added another.

Bethel made a decisive run with six runs to propel ahead 9-3, but Grace had another rally in store.

In the eighth, Grace scored four runs — doing all their damage with two outs. Friesema was hit by a pitch, and Cayden Calloway singled to keep the inning afloat.

A ground ball from Gabriel Maldonado plated one run. Jose Ayala took care of the rest, belting a three-run home run to left field to slice Bethel's lead to two.

The ninth inning seemed to indicate another big inning was brewing for Grace. The Lancers loaded the bases with one out, but the Pilots escaped unscathed with a pop out and a ground out to wrap up the game.

Mason Wire hit 2 for 4, and Rojek was 2 for 3.

In the second game, Bethel again got off to a quick start with a two-run opening inning.

Grace pulled a run back with a solo homer by Ian Wilson in the third.

Wilson provided another RBI with a single in the fourth. Fernandez soon followed up with a three-run homer in the frame as Grace took the lead for good.

The home run parade continued into the fifth frame. Joey Diaz launched a three-run shot to lift Grace to a 9-3 lead. Wilson's big day continued with his second homer on the next at-bat.

In the sixth, the Lancers tacked on four more runs. Luke Cherry drove in Addison Hickman and Wire with a two-out double.

Wilson finished the game 3 for 3 with 3 runs, 3 RBIs and two home runs. Fernandez was 3 for 4 with a trio of runs driven in, and Maldonado had three hits as well.
