WESTFIELD, Ind. – Grace's baseball team completed its four-game set with Indiana Wesleyan on Friday afternoon, dropping both games 11-6 and 9-1 at Grand Park.
The Lancers were within striking distance until the late innings of game one, trailing 5-2 heading into the seventh inning.
IWU held a slim two-run lead when
Mayo Fernandez provided a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit in half in the third inning. A three-run inning from the Wildcats in the bottom half pushed the margin up to four.
Cayden Calloway belted his sixth home run of the season in the sixth inning, followed by another RBI from Fernandez an inning later to get the Lancers within two runs at the seventh inning stretch.
The next six runs, however, came from the Wildcats to make the scoreline 11-3.
Grace responded with three runs of its own in the final inning, but the margin was too great with the final score reading 11-6.
The Lancers lineup collected 10 hits in the game with 3 hits each coming from
Carter Stogsdill and
Grant Rojek. Rojek added 3 runs, 1 walk and 1 RBI.
Grace plated the first run in the series finale and held a 1-0 lead into the fourth inning.
Stogsdill opened the game with a leadoff double and later scored on a
Matt Friesema RBI single.
Caleb Davis allowed just two hits through the first three innings, but ran into trouble in the fourth. He had two strikeouts in 4.0 innings of work.
Once again IWU put together a string of runs to seize control of the game and go on to win 9-1.
Grace was limited at the plate with five hits in the game. Friesema collected 2 hits and 1 RBI. Stogsdill had 1 hit and 1 run.
Grace will play a four-game series against No. 25 Huntington on April 10-11. Both doubleheaders are scheduled for 1 p.m. at Tom Roy - UPI Park.
