MISHAWAKA, Ind. - Grace College's softball team picked up a shutout victory over Goshen, leading to a series split on Wednesday afternoon.
Emma Hiss was stellar in the circle in game one, allowing just three base runners and striking out 12 batters aiding Grace (11-27, 5-19 Crossroads League) to a 6-0 victory.
The Maple Leafs (14-20, 8-12 CL) bounced back in game two, claiming a 9-1 victory in five innings.
Hiss's dominance was on display from the opening inning. The freshman struck out the side in the first inning and six of the first eight batters she faced. Goshen collected their first of just two hits for the entire game in the third frame.
Emme Meyering was walked to start the top of the third inning and  she advanced to second on a fielder's choice. Hiss then aided her own cause with an RBI single to center field to push Grace ahead 1-0.
The fourth and fifth frames passed quickly as all four half innings were retired in order.
Daily Rickard got on board to start the sixth inning, Rickard stole second then Hiss blasted a two-run shot for her sixth home run of the season. It was her team leading 26th RBI of the season and tied her for the team lead with six home runs with
Lauren Kirkpatrick. Both players are now tied for sixth for single season home runs in Grace's program history.
The Lancers continued to pour on the offense following the home run when
Avery Sleeth and
Allie Furches both singled to give Grace runners on the corners with just one out.
Sage Ladig singled in a run and
Sydney Argo grounded out but still plated a run to give Grace a 5-0 run. The final marker of the inning came when Meyering singled into the outfield allowing Ladig to cross home to give the Lancers a six run advantage.
Hiss finished her dominant performance strong, striking out the final two batters and retiring the seventh frame in order  to clinch the 6-0 victory for Grace.
Hiss allowed just two hits and walked one while mowing down seven batters on strikes. She also led all players with two hits and three RBIs. Grace out hit Goshen 6-2 and Rickard and Meyer each had a stolen base. The Lancers did not commit an error in the game.
Game two started with the Lancers getting a runner in scoring position in the opening inning. Daily Rickard and Hiss were on first and second with one out but Goshen retired the next two batters without surrendering a run.
In the second frame a solo home run, which marked Goshen's first run of the day, with two outs sparked the Maple Leafs offense. They would add on four more runs to carry a 5-0 lead into the third frame.
Meyering had a leadoff double in the third inning and scored two batters later when Rickard added a RBI double.
The Lancers offense was quiet for the rest of the game as Goshen added three runs in the fourth and another in the fifth to claim the 9-1 victory in game two.
Rickard was 3-3 from the plate in game two while Sleeth and Meyering also added hits.
Grace will return to action on Saturday when they travel to Fort Wayne to take on St. Francis.
