Athletic Training

The Grace College Sports Medicine department supports Grace's primary goals of developing students in character, competence and service. It is the Mission of the Sports Medicine staff to serve and promote the physical, emotional and spiritual wellness of each student-athlete by establishing a program of high quality and comprehensive individual health care, founded on scientific evidence-based practice.

The principles of prevention, evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation set by the Sports Medicine staff will guide our athletes into a positive, healthy, improved quality of life and safe participation in Grace College Athletics.

Grace College proudly partners with Lutheran Kosciusko Hospital (LKH) and Optimum Performance Sports (OPS) to provide athletic training services. Grace thanks LKH and OPS for providing quality sports medicine care to each student-athlete on campus.

Policies

Insurance Information
The athletic injury insurance carried by Grace College is a secondary insurance policy. If injured during practice or competition, the athlete’s primary insurance is billed initially. After the primary insurance has covered its portion, the claim is forwarded to Grace College’s insurance carrier for processing. Unless the injury occurs as part of an emergency situation, all injuries must be reported to athletic training staff prior to seeking other treatment. Student-athletes seeking care for athletic injuries without prior approval of Grace College’s athletic training staff will be held responsible for any expense incurred.

Grace College cannot guarantee that providers’ recommended treatments are covered by insurance; therefore, it is the student-athlete / parents’ responsibility to ensure the medical provider obtains pre-authorization from their primary insurance prior to any medical procedure or purchase of medical equipment. Student-athletes / parents will be responsible for any expense not covered by insurance.

Athletic Physical Examination
In order to participate in team or individual practices or competitions, all student-athletes must fill out a Medical History Questionnaire and pass a physical examination by a Medical Doctor (MD), Doctor of Osteopathy (DO), Physicians Assistant (PA), or Nurse Practitioner (NP). Student-athletes must also have on file sickle cell trait status, concussion baseline testing, waiver of liability form and emergency information form. Student-athletes who have undergone surgery or who have had extenuating medical circumstances requiring further medical evaluation must present a release to return to full athletic activities from their treating physician before they will be allowed to participate in any team competition, practice, or training session.

Visiting Team Information
The primary athletic training room is located at the Gordon Health and Wellness Center. For indoor events at the Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center, the auxillary training room is located on the lower level through the corridor adjacent to the arena. For outdoor events at Miller Athletic Complex, athletic training services will be available at the specific location of the game. Equipment such as electrical stimulation, ultrasound, cold and heat modalities are available. If the visiting team is traveling without a certified athletic trainer, the staff requests that supplies and written treatment protocols be provided. The training staff is ready to accommodate each visiting team as needed. During intercollegiate events, Grace will provide water, cups, injury ice and emergency equipment; however, shower towels are not provided. For complete visitor's guide, click HERE.
