WINONA LAKE, Ind. – Grace's men's soccer team suffered a 1-0 defeat to Bethel College on Saturday afternoon at Miller Field.
In a chippy match that included 36 fouls, 8 yellow cards and 2 penalty kicks, a second-half goal from the Pilots proved to be the only score of the match.
The match was played fairly even in the first half with Bethel holding a slight 6-5 advantage in shot attempts over the Lancers (7-3-2; 2-1-2 Crossroads League).
Bethel's Pedro Amaral slotted home the only goal of the match 10 minutes into the second half, and the action seemed to ramp up after that point.
The Pilots earned a penalty kick when an attacking player was tripped up inside the penalty box. But Grace goalkeeper Collin Cone made one of his eight saves to stop the PK attempt and keep Grace's hopes alive.
With 13 minutes remaining in the game, Grace was awarded a penalty kick of its own, but Shane Barthuly's kick was saved by Cody Troyer.
Four minutes later, a 25-yard shot attempt from Kyle Hamlin forced Troyer to make a diving save to keep the Lancers scoreless.
Over the final 10 minutes of play, four yellow cards were issued with each team receiving two as the Pilots (7-3-3; 1-2-2 CL) held on for their first league win of the season.
Steven Fiema and Barthuly led Grace's team with three shots, and Devin Kemmerer added two attempts of his own.
Bethel finished the match with a 19-11 shot advantage and took five corner kicks to Grace's three corners.
The Lancers will look to get back on the winning track on Wednesday when they travel to Taylor for a 7 p.m. match.
