No. 5 IWU tops Grace in top 10 showdown

MARION, Ind. – In a tough, gritty clash between a pair of teams ranked in the NAIA Top 10, No. 10 Grace struggled on the offensive end in a 66-56 loss to No. 5 Indiana Wesleyan.

The Lancers (4-2; 1-1 Crossroads League) committed 19 turnovers and shot just 36 percent from the field in defeat.

Grace fell behind early before scoring eight straight points to take a 16-13 lead.

Neither team shot particularly well in the first half as both squads were less than 39 percent from the field and less than 15 percent from the 3-throw line, but it was the Wildcats (8-1; 2-0 CL) who took a small advantage into halftime, leading 32-28.

Bruce Grimm Jr. paced Grace's offense in the first half with 12 points and two assists.

Grace quickly evened the score with the first four points of the second half before the Wildcats responded with seven unanswered to open up a seven-point edge.

The back-and-forth affair continued as the Lancers scored seven in a row knot the score at 39 apiece.

Grace could only manage three points over the next five minutes of play as Indiana Wesleyan took the lead for good.

A 3-pointer from Elliot Smith cut IWU's lead to 50-48 with 5:38 to play, but the Wildcats won the game from the free throw line. Indiana Wesleyan made 11 free throws over the final 4:14 of play to pull away for their final 10-point win.

Grimm led all players with 22 points, including a 9-of-12 performance from the free throw line. Smith scored 12 points with a pair of 3-pointers, and Greg Miller tallied nine points and 11 rebounds.

Overall, Grace made only 18 of their 50 field goal attempts, including just 3-of-18 (17 percent) from the 3-point line.

The Lancers will look to bounce back on Saturday with a home game against league opponent Huntington University at 3 p.m.
