WINONA LAKE, Ind. – In a match that featured the two early frontrunners in the Crossroads League, Indiana Wesleyan's men's tennis team eked out a 5-4 win over Grace College on Saturday.
The Lancers (2-1; 2-1 CL) won three points in singles competition, but they could not overcome dropping two doubles points and fell to the Wildcats (4-0; 3-0 CL).
Grace's No. 1 doubles team of Michael Blevins and Nikola Todorovic found themselves in a battle with the Wildcats and ultimately fell 8-6.
The No. 3 duo of Michael Humphrey and Jack Wang dominated with an 8-1 victory to give Grace a chance heading into singles play.
Daniel Sanchez knocked off IWU's top singles player 6-3, 6-2, and Michael Blevins won 4-6, 7-6, 10-7 at No. 2 singles.
Michael Humphrey earned Grace's fourth point with a steady 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 5 singles, but those wins were not enough for the Lancers.
"While this was a tough loss, we did not play well and competed well below our potential at several slots," said Grace head coach Larry Schuh. "We are confident that when we meet them in the conference tournament, it will be a different result."
The Lancers will hope to rebound on Tuesday with a match at Taylor University at 4 p.m.
