SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – Spring Arbor scored a golden-goal winner to complete a comeback against Grace's men's soccer team on Saturday evening.
The Lancers led for nearly all of regulation thanks to Ben Cahill's strike, but the Cougars rallied with a second-half goal and the game winner in the second overtime to win 2-1.
Grace outshot Spring Arbor 13-11 despite the loss. The Cougars (9-6-1; 5-2 Crossroads League) converted two of their five shots on goal, however, to secure the victory.
Cahill's individual effort put the Lancers on top in the 12th minute of play. The Lancers (6-6-1; 2-4-1 CL) doubled Spring Arbor's shot production in the first half at 6-3, but Cahill's shot was the only score.
Shortly into the second half, Steven Fiema eyed an effort at the Cougars' goal. His shot was denied by the goalpost, however, in the 51st minute.
Spring Arbor found the equalizing goal in the 72nd minute of action. Neither team could net the winner over the final minutes of regulation, sending the match into overtime.
Grace tallied two of the three shots in the first overtime period. Shane Barthuly had a header saved by Spring Arbor's goalkeeper.
The Cougars needed less than three minutes of the second overtime session to win the game as Michael Caccavo provided the goal.
Saturday's match contained a high number of fouls with the teams combining for 57 fouls and five yellow cards.
Ben Cahill led all players with his five shot attempts, and Fiema added three shots.
Jacob Cole took the loss in goal for Grace, surrendering two goals in 102 minutes of action.
The Lancers will have their regular-season home finale on Tuesday when they take on St. Francis at 4 p.m. Tuesday's match, which can be heard live here, will also be Senior Day for Grace.
