Grace outshoots Bethel, falls on the road

Box Score

MISHAWAKA, Ind. – Despite taking 13 shots and nine shots on goal, Grace's men's soccer team came up empty on the road in a 2-0 loss to Bethel on Saturday evening.

The Lancers had a 9-4 advantage in shots on goal, but the Pilots made their attempts count to take down Grace.

"We did strive tonight, but the bottom line is they were better than us on this night. We are not playing fast enough and with enough quality with the injuries we have," said Grace head coach Matt Hotchkin. "This is a hole that's difficult to climb out of, but we just have to find a way."

Bethel grabbed an early advantage by scoring within the first 10 minutes of action. Grace's offense produced eight shots in the opening period as well as four corner kicks, but the Lancers (5-5-1; 1-3-1 CL) were unable to find the back of the net.

Grace continued to look for the equalizer for much of the second half with five more shots, three of which were on goal. But the Pilots found the insurance goal they needed in the 76th minute to secure the victory.

Steven Fiema led all players with six shots and four shots on goal, and Austin Altimus tallied three shots on goal.

Travis Kirkland made three saves in goal for the Lancers.

Grace will hope to get back to its winning ways on Wednesday with a home match against Taylor at 4 p.m.
