OAKLAND CITY, Ind. – Grace's soccer team fell short of reaching the 2013 NCCAA Nationals on Tuesday when they were eliminated by Oakland City.
The Lancers tied 1-1 after regulation and two overtime periods, but Oakland City advanced in the regional semifinals 4-1 in the penalty shootout. The loss ends Grace's season at 7-8-2.
Grace got on the scoreboard first when Gift Sibukome buried his shot in the 30th minute. Steven Fiema applied intense pressure on Oakland City's goalkeeper, whose clearance fell to Sibukome for the shot.
Oakland City tied the game eight minutes later when the Lancers failed to clear a corner kick in the penalty box. The half remained tied as Grace held an 8-5 advantage in shots.
The Lancers outshot Oakland City again in the second half, 8-6, but Grace was unable to capitalize with a goal. Jon Christensen, Fiema and Jonathan Sands each had strong attempts in the second half to no avail.
The overtime periods were also scoreless. Grace wasted another shot advantage of 4-2 over the extra 20 minutes of soccer as the game went into penalty kicks.
After Grace's first two penalty tries were unsuccessful, Oakland City had a commanding 3-0 lead. Shane Barthuly converted his attempt, Grace's third chance, but it was too late. Oakland City ended Grace's season by making their fourth shot.
Sibukome and Fiema tied for team honors with five shots apiece, and Barthuly added four shots.
