An own goal dooms Grace versus John Brown

Box Score SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. – Despite outdoing John Brown's soccer team in most statistical categories, Grace's women's team fell 1-0 on Saturday.

The Lady Lancers (3-5) held John Brown to just two shots on goal in the match, but the Golden Eagles won courtesy of a first-half own goal.

The Golden Eagles (3-2) recorded the only goal of the game in the 35th minute of action when a ball deflected off a Grace defender into the Lady Lancers' own net.

Grace continued to push for the equalizer with a 12-10 advantage in shots as well as a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks. But the Lady Lancers were unable to capitalize on their scoring opportunities in the second half.

Holly Bennett led all players with three shots on goal, and Meredith Hollar added three shots as well.

Goalkeeper Carmen Barnhill surrendered one goal in 90 minutes in a losing effort for Grace.

"We can only go up from here. We have been set back and are not playing our brand of soccer. We let too many variables affect what we're doing, and there were several variables," said Grace head coach Michael Voss. "The great part is we have all the right people on board. It can be done. We simply need to move forward and live on mission."

The Lady Lancers will next gear up for the Crossroads League season next weekend when they travel to Goshen on Sept. 21.
