HUNTINGTON, Ind. – Freshman Mariah Zumbrun produced a three-set victory at No. 3 singles to lift Grace's women's tennis team to a dramatic 5-4 win at Huntington.
The Lady Lancers (3-6; 3-4 Crossroads League) overcame an early deficit to win on Zumbrun's 6-7, 6-2, 6-3 victory.
"I was extremely proud of our girls' fight tonight. This was without question a team victory," said Grace head coach Scott Moore. "Mariah [Zumbrun] came through big, winning a third set in a match that took nearly three hours. I thought tonight was a big step in the right direction for this program."
Jayna Huber and Gabrielle Lawrence came up with Grace's only point in doubles' competition, winning 8-4 at No. 2.
Lawrence continued her impressive freshman season by winning 6-3, 6-1 at No. 5 singles.
Sarah Hinkel claimed a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 4 singles, and Katie Etter's opponent retired, setting the scene for Zumbrun's climactic victory.
With the win, Grace jumped ahead of Huntington in the league standings. The Lady Lancers have one regular-season match remaining before the Crossroads League Tournament next week. Grace will play at Marian on Thursday at 3 p.m.
