FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Despite placing four players in double-digit scoring, Grace's women's basketball team did not have enough firepower to upset No. 1 St. Francis, losing 84-67 on Saturday.
Juaneice Jackson rattled off four 3-pointers for 20 points, but Grace struggled to find its shooting touch against the No. 1-ranked Cougars (18-0; 6-0 Crossroads League). The Lady Lancers (7-11; 3-3 CL) made 33 percent of their shot attempts, creating just six assists on 24 baskets.
The contest could not have started better for the Lady Lancers who shocked the home team with an opening 24-13 run. Jackson ripped off 12 points during Grace's fast start, and sophomore Gabby Bryant added seven points.
The Cougars held their ground, however, and claimed their first lead of the game at 32-31 with 4:04 left in the first half. St. Francis proceeded to end the half on a 10-2 run to earn a seven-point advantage entering the midway break.
Less than two minutes into the second half, St. Francis had opened up a 10-point cushion that Grace would not be able to break.
The Lady Lancers faltered to 11-of-38 shooting in the second half (29 percent) to hamper their cause, and the Cougars outscored Grace by 10 after halftime.
Lindsey Schaefer (11 points) and Gabby Bryant (10) each reached season-highs in scoring as Schaefer also pulled down 10 rebounds.
Juaneice Jackson's 20 points also came with six boards and three steals. Freshman Darian Patton, in her first career start, scored 10 points on a pair of treys to go along with seven rebounds. It was Patton's third straight game in double-digit scoring.
Allison Kauffman just missed a double-double with nine points and eight boards.
Grace held an impressive plus-eight advantage in rebounds thanks to 20 offensive boards, but the Lady Lancers also committed five more turnovers than the Cougars.
The Lady Lancers' next league contest is on Wednesday night in Indianapolis when they face Marian.
