WINONA LAKE, Ind. – Grace's women's basketball team displayed a swarming defense in a 67-54 rout of Mt. Vernon Nazarene on Wednesday.
The Lady Lancers (9-12; 5-4 Crossroads League) forced Mt. Vernon into 25 turnovers, and the Cougars managed just 33 percent shooting at the Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center.
Juaneice Jackson climbed closer to the all-time scoring record for Grace, scoring 13 points to go along with five steals. She now has 1,623 points – nine points behind Tracie Mezera for first place on Grace's career scoring list.
Allison Kauffman led all players with 19 points, and Dariyan Morris added six points and four steals.
Grace forced the Cougars (3-15; 2-7 CL) into 16 turnovers in the first half. The Lady Lancers scored 21 of their 41 points before halftime off Cougar turnovers. Grace used an early 10-2 spurt to push ahead of the Cougars by 12 less than nine minutes into the contest. A 3-pointer in the final seconds from Darian Patton – her second of the first half – put Grace ahead 41-29 at the break.
Mt. Vernon never mounted a serious threat to Grace's lead in the second half. The Cougars trailed by at least 10 for the duration of the second half. Their shooting woes were particularly evident after halftime as Mt. Vernon shot 28 percent from the floor and 14 percent from beyond the arc in the final 20 minutes.
All 15 players on Grace's roster saw playing time in the rout.
Gabby Bryant finished with seven points and two assists, Chloe Pridgen had six points and four boards, and JoElen Fickell produced four points and five rebounds.
The Lady Lancers are currently tied for fourth place in the league standings. Grace will travel to Upland, Ind., on Saturday to take on Taylor at 1 p.m.
