WINONA LAKE, Ind. – Grace College's Homecoming festivities culminated with the men's soccer match against Huntington at Miller Field on Saturday.
The Lancers (6-3-1, 1-1-1 Crossroads League) and Foresters tangled up in a memorable affair on a chilly, wet afternoon. Overall, 10 cards were issued with 3 red cards and 36 fouls between the squads.
Grace opened the game's scoring in the fourth minute when Zack Tucker blocked a clearance from Huntington's goalkeeper into the back of the net. In the first half, Grace held a 5-2 advantage in shots.
The match had its first red card early in the second half when Justin Festa was ejected. The Foresters (3-8-1, 0-2-1 CL) converted the game-tying penalty kick at the 52:44 mark in what turned out to be the final tally of the match.
Despite being down a man, the Lancers seemed to assert themselves offensively in the second half. Grace had several near scores, including strong looks from Jon Christensen, Austin Altimus, Kyle Hamlin and Trent Smith. But the Foresters' defense held firm through regulation to deny 10 shots from the Lancers.
Huntington picked up its red card midway through the first overtime session, helping Grace hold a 3-1 advantage in shots during the period.
The Lancers went down to nine men in the second overtime period with a red card on Danilo Carnelos in the 105th minute, resulting in a frenzied finish as each side had chances to win the game. But despite six shots between the squads in the final 10 minutes, nothing could separate the Lancers and Foresters on Saturday.
Hamlin led all players with seven shots and four shots on goal, and Altimus had four shots. Jacob Cole and Robbie Barnhill teamed up for the effort in goal for Grace. The Lancers overall held a 21-13 advantage in shots.
The Lancers' next league match is at Spring Arbor on Wednesday night.
