WINONA LAKE, Ind. -
Jacob Stump served as the hero for Grace's men's tennis team to clinch the Lancers' 5-4 win over Goshen on Tuesday.
With the match level at 4-4, only one singles' match went to a third set. After falling in the opening set 6-7, Stump rallied 6-0 to force a tiebreaker. Halfway through the third set, Stump started cramping. But the sophomore continued to battle, eventually grinding out a 6-4 win at No. 3 singles to win the match. The Maple Leafs had several opportunities to hold as Stump led 5-4, but Stump battled on to clinch the match for Grace.
With the win, the Lancers (6-2, 6-2 CL) earned the No. 3 seed in next week's Crossroads League Tournament.Â
"This was a huge win for us, giving us the three seed in the upcoming conference tournament," said Grace head coach
Larry Schuh. "We've had some tough losses lately, but this is just the kind of match that can give us momentum heading into the conference tournament next week. Jake Stump was the hero of the night, coming through for the team with a gutsy, nerves-of-steel performance."
Stump and
Daniel Sanchez teamed up at No. 1 doubles to blank their opponent, and
Jose Marval and
Ethan Grove won 8-4 at No. 2 doubles. Sanchez and Marval also eased by their opponents at No. 1 and No. 2 singles respectively.
