Lancers win third straight to open season

 

UPLAND, Ind. – Grace's men's tennis team continued its perfect start to 2014, defeating Taylor 7-2 on the road on Thursday.

The Lancers (3-0, 3-0 Crossroads League) took two of three doubles' matches and all but one singles' matches in the victory.

"This was a great team win for us. Our singles' play continues to be strong, and we will only get stronger as the season progresses," said Grace head coach Larry Schuh. "The guys are really coming together as a team. They are pulling for each other. We have some tough matches looking forward, but we will be ready."

Daniel Sanchez and Jose Marval continued to pace Grace's squad. The duo won 8-5 at No. 1 doubles, and Sanchez won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles with Marval earning a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 2.

Jacob Stump and Ethan Grove echoed the efforts of Sanchez and Marval in the middle positions. After combining in an 8-5 victory at No. 2 doubles, Stump won in straight sets at No. 3 singles and Grove pulled out a three-set winner at No. 4 singles.

Ricardo Bedon grabbed the final point for the Lancers with a 6-2, 7-5 scoreline at No. 6 singles.

The Lancers conclude the week with a crucial matchup on Saturday at rival Spring Arbor at 1 p.m.

 

DOUBLES

1. Daniel Sanchez/Jose Marval won 8-5

2. Ethan Grove/Jacob Stump won 8-5

3. David Driscoll/Gabe Vervynckt lost 8-6

SINGLES

1. Daniel Sanchez won 6-1, 6-1

2. Jose Marval won 6-2, 6-4

3. Jacob Stump won 6-0, 6-4

4. Ethan Grove won 5-7, 7-5, 1-0

5. Gabe Vervynckt lost 4-6, 6-1, 1-0

6. Ricardo Bedon won 6-2, 7-5
