SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – Grace's men's tennis team routed rival Spring Arbor 8-1 on Saturday in a crucial Crossroads League match.
The Lancers improve to 4-0 on the season and are only of only two teams (Marian) who have yet to lose in the league.
"The final score does not reflect how tough of a match this was. Four of the six singles' matches were up in the air for quite a while. This is easily the most nervous 8-1 match I've ever coached," said Grace head coach Larry Schuh. "Jose fought hard today against a tough player, collecting himself to win. Jake is playing very strong and has improved exponentially from last year, and Gabe came off a tough loss against Taylor with a strong showing today."
Grace took two of the three doubles' matches to earn an early advantage. Daniel Sanchez and Jose Marval won 8-3 at No. 1 doubles, and Ethan Grove and Jacob Stump teamed up 8-1 at No. 2.
The Lancers went on to sweep all six singles' points, although many of the matches were far from easy. Marval dropped the first set but rallied to win the super set 10-5 at No. 2 singles. Gabe Vervynckt and Ricardo Bedon each won a set 7-5 in their straight-sets victories at No. 5 and No. 6 singles respectively.
Sanchez (6-0, 6-0) was the easy winner at No. 1 singles, Stump won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 and Grove claimed a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 4.
Grace, in pursuit of its third-straight CL championship, will face off with Indiana Wesleyan at Miller Field on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
