Baseball pours in 23 runs in win over Marauders

TUCSON, Ariz. – High-octane offense propelled Grace's baseball team past NCAA Div. II University of Mary Marauders in 23-10 victory on Monday.

The Lancers (4-1) rebounded from a tough 16-7 loss to the College of Idaho on Sunday to kick off the team's Spring Break trip to Tucson, Ariz.

In Sunday's loss, the College of Idaho scored 13 of its 16 runs after the fifth inning to pull away from Grace. The Lancers' defense struggled to hold down Idaho after claiming a 3-2 lead.

Grace scored two runs in the fourth and added another in the top of the fifth. Grace's four runs in the top of the eighth inning were too little, too late.

Paul Blankley batted 2-for-4 with a double, Austin Baker was 2-for-5 with an RBI, and Aaron Christenberry tripled in the loss. Tim Weber tossed five innings from the mound, allowing two runs with two strikeouts in the start.

Against the University of Mary, the Lancers (4-1) scored early and often with a total of 27 hits. Grace tallied a total of 6 extra-base hits, 2 home runs and 3 triples to win 23-10. Senior Matt Morgart was one base away from hitting for the cycle going 4-for-4 with 6 RBIs. Morgart finished his remarkable performance with two singles, one triple and a three-run home run in the fourth inning.

Joe Dougherty pitched five strong innings allowing three runs in an impressive start to the contest. The offense backed Dougherty by tacking on seven early runs to jump out to an 7-1 lead after three innings. This lead was maintained throughout the remainder of the game despite a notable offensive performance by Mary, who tallied 16 hits and 10 runs of its own. The Marauders' bullpen struggled to limit the damage as Grace continued to pour on the offensive pressure, plating four runs in the sixth, four in the eighth and six more in the ninth.

The Lancers' lineup was resilient as every starter recorded at least one hit throughout the game. Adding to the Lancers' offensive attack was Frank Rocchio who went 5-for-7 and CJ Swartz who finished 4-for-6. Austin Green and Brook Vosler each were 3-for-6 with two runs, and Vosler drove in three runs and stole a base as well. Christenberry added a two-run home run late in the game to put the Marauders away.

Grace baseball will seek to build on its performance against Northwestern (Iowa). Grace will play against Northwestern in a nine-inning game on Tuesday and Thursday.
