Lady Lancers split second day of Florida trip

CLERMONT, Fla. – Grace's softball team went 1-1 on Monday in the Lady Lancers' second day of competition in Florida.

The Lady Lancers handled Point Park 7-1 before dropping a narrow 5-3 contest against Cornerstone.

In Monday's opener against Point Park, Grace's first-inning run proved to be the only tally of the first three innings. Point Park tied the game with a run in the top of the fourth, and the contest remained tied heading into the sixth.

Grace broke the game open with a six-run inning in the bottom of the sixth. A pinch-hit triple from Hannah Herbster sparked Grace to score a run. Samantha Johnson, Chandler Elliott and Ashley Kleinbub all helped to drive runs in the inning to hand Grace a 7-1 lead.

Elliott took care of the rest from the mound. The freshman hurler tossed the best game of her young career, pitching a complete game with one run allowed. She struck out four, scattered six hits and walked one batter in an impressive performance. Elliott also tripled and drove in two runs from the plate.

Morgan Hutcheson had the hot bat, going 3-for-4 with a run, three triples and an RBI. Kleinbub was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, and Johnson finished 2-for-3. Grace finished with six extra-base hits in the victory – all triples.

The Lady Lancers turned around to face Cornerstone immediately after beating Point Park. The low-scoring pitchers' duel saw seven of the game's eight runs scored in one inning.

Grace struck first, plating two runs in the top of the third. Brooke Shell jumpstarted Grace's inning with a single. She then stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error. Hutcheson singled in Shell, and Elliott provided the second run of the inning with a double to plate Clarissa Knight.

The Golden Eagles responded with five runs in the bottom of the inning. Cornerstone scored five runs on four hits and two walks to grab the lead for good.

Grace was unable to mount a come-from-behind rally in response. Hutcheson scampered home from third base on a wild pitch in the fifth inning, but the Lady Lancers stranded another runner on third in the inning. Grace was three up, three down in the last two innings to make the final score 5-3.

Cornerstone mustered only two hits outside of the third inning. Elliott pitched two scoreless innings of relief, and Allison Franklin allowed one run in 3.2 innings. Shell tallied 1 hit, 1 run and 1 stolen base, and Kati Gregory was 1-for-2 from the plate.
