HUNTINGTON, Ind. - Despite taking 24 shots and five corner kicks, Grace's women's soccer had to settle for a 1-1 tie with Huntington on Tuesday.
The Lady Lancers (4-6-2, 3-2-1, Crossroads League) scored in the 82nd minute to even the score, and neither team found a winner in overtime.
The Foresters (4-7-3, 0-4-2 CL) struck first, rippling the back of the net in the 40th minute.
Grace ramped up the offensive pressure in the second half. The Lady Lancers took 13 shots and tried four corner kicks in the second 45 minutes.
In the 78th minute, Kristen Bellinger's shot clipped off the goalpost. Four minutes later, Liz Van Wormer had an effort that ricocheted off the crossbar.
At the 81:30 mark, Grace's pressure finally paid off when Sabina Meyers netted to tie the game.
Grace had two more shots in the final minute of regulation, including one from Kaitlyn Hayes and one from Maile Grout, but neither shot was converted.
In the overtime periods, Grace dominated possession and chances. The Lady Lancers outshot the Foresters 5-2 in the two sessions, but none of Grace's chances turned out to be a golden-goal winner.
"Some days things just don't go your way. We held the ball well, moved it, got creative and made good attempts to solve problems. We developed chance creation better from when we started and picked up the pace in the second half and overtimes. We just lacked the finishing touch to bang home any of the good opportunities we had," said Grace head coach Michael Voss. "It's a very narrow margin that separates the goal-scoring opportunity and a goal. We need goals not crossbars or posts. In a match like this, we needed to be cleaner and more composed. This crew can play. We need it all to come together at the same time for 90 minutes to be effective."
Abby Schue, the two-time reigning NCCAA National Defender of the Week, was credited with nine saves in 110 minutes in goal.
Bellinger tried five shots to lead Grace's team, and Flavia Faria, Clair Snodgrass and Liz Van Wormer attempted three shots apiece.
The Lady Lancers return to 1st Source Bank Field on Saturday, hosting No. 1 Spring Arbor at 7 p.m.
