Men’s Soccer scores twice in second half at MVNU

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - Grace's men's soccer team drew with Mt. Vernon Nazarene 2-2 on Wednesday.

The Lancers (7-6-3, 2-5-1 Crossroads League) netted twice in the second half against the Cougars, who are receiving votes in the NAIA.

The match started with a rash of fouls but few shots. Over the first 15 minutes of the game, six fouls were called compared to two shots. 

The Cougars (11-3-3, 4-2-2 CL) scored the only goal of the first half in the 35th minute to go into halftime up 1-0. MVNU held a slight 6-4 advantage in shots over the first 45 minutes.

The excitement kicked in during the second half with three goals. Grace netted first after halftime to tie the game 1-1. 

Santiago Maya served a ball into a dangerous position in the 68th minute, and Dominic Harris redirected the ball off a Cougar defender into the net. Harris was not credited with a goal as it was counted as an own goal, but his night was far from finished.

MVNU took its second lead of the match at the 77:26 mark, pressuring Grace's backline to create the scoring chance.

Harris used some late heroics secured his name on the scoresheet and tie the match. He scored with just 1:54 left on the clock to keep Grace alive and make the score 2-2.

In the first overtime period, Grace nearly won the game with a shot off the crossbar. The Lancers had two shots in the 10-minute session but were unable to win it.

Neither team could produce a dramatic game winner in the second overtime, and the sides settled for a 2-2 draw after 110 minutes of action.

Harris and Colin Cape were credited with two shots apiece, and Harris had two shots on goal.

Kurt Hamlin made two saves in 110 minutes as Grace's goalkeeper.

The Lancers end the regular season on Saturday at home. Grace hosts Goshen for a 7 p.m. match at 1st Source Bank Field. The Lancers need a win over Goshen and a loss by Taylor to earn a spot in next week's CL Tournament.
